Tucker gave you a good suggestion if you're looking for a portable fish finder. I've never used a portable fish finder like that but I have heard a lot of good things about them.

Your other option would be to get a fish finder, which mounts to the boat and stays there. If he keeps his boat in storage, you could take this route. This method would allow him to mount the fish finder and not have to worry about transporting it every trip. But for the smaller boats, most people just get a portable one.

If he only fishes small lakes, I wouldn't reccomend considering the GPS capabilities. The GPS enabled fish finders are very expensive normally. The absolute cheapest that I have ran across is a Lowrance fish finder for 400 bucks on sale. The GPS is best suited for fishing large lakes. Instead, be sure that the fish finder you choose has depth readings on the fish, depth of the water, and water temperature. Those things will probably prove to be more useful than the GPS given his situation in my opinion.

Depth finders and fish finders are generally the same thing and yes, a fish finder and/or depth finder will almost always function for both things.

The 2 brands to really look into are Lowrance and Humminbird in my opinion. I have used both and have been very pleased with them.

The Humminbird 110 Fishing Buddy. Takes 6 AA batteries. Clamps to the boat. Has different fish alerts on it, and i do believe it tells you the depth also! Gander moutain has them, and so does bass pro. They are about $130.00 Here is the link to the Fish Finder > http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_97460_250003000_250000000_250003000_250-3-0#prodDescription Hope i have helped!

Great way to keep your skycaddie always in sight on your cart while you are contemplating that next shot. Easy to take on and off too.

So pleased with the cupholder. The other ones for the gps were too expensive for my needs. Once you learn how to do it - it is a breeze.

I have been somewhat disappointed with this item. Great concept; however, it just doesn't hold well. I have resorted to using a cord to tie my SkyCaddie to the cart so that I won't lose it. So far the entire unit has fallen out of the holder after I had done my best to make sure it was secure. Frankly, I have lost faith in this and would recommend you look for something better.

The golf course is about the only place I can still go to get away from Blackberrys. Please don't take this from me too.

You might be better served looking for a golf-specific GPS app. Range finders are very accurate (more than GPS, by a yard or so) but you do need a steady hand to shoot at the flagstick.

Only because you asked.... GolfTraxx

Down-loadable application to your smart phone (e.g. Blackberry, Treo, Windows Mobile, Moto Q, etc.) that is either GPS enabled OR can blue-tooth synch with an external GPS. I get distance to front, center and back of green, as well as the distance to reach and carry an unlimited number of hazards on each hole. Terrific as it is FREE when you send in a map of a course not in the system, UNLIMITED downloads of other courses world wide. Really cool interface where you can configure your club selections based on how far you hit them and have the GPS suggest the right club based on the distance to be hit.

So, why this over standard GPS
* NO additional hardware to purchase
* No synching with a PC
* Always with me
* More data on each hole (hazards and targets)
