Does it sound like my friend has any specific disorder?

A very close friend of mine has a lot of issues and I’m wondering what his “symptoms” or behavior indicate. There is no doubt in my mind that something isn’t right, but I don’t know how to figure out what.

He drinks often and sometimes alone or way before other people. When he drinks, he tends to get belligerent and frequently destructive. Without warning he just snaps and destroys whatever is in his vicinity. When he does this, nobody can persuade him to relax; in fact trying to stop him makes it worse. He once took a golf club and hit a can of premixed drywall compound into a wall, creating a HUGE mess. He then lied about it to everyone in the house and even helped clean it up while talking about how it makes him angry that people just leave a path of destruction.

He is also VERY lazy. I know laziness isn’t a condition, but its more than that. We are both students at the same university, and last year he failed every single class. He wasted all of his time, slept a lot during the day, and skipped the vast majority of his classes. After talking to a psychologist, he got a prescription for ADD medication and was granted a retroactive withdrawal after his diagnosis, effectively giving him a clean slate to try another year of classes. Finals week just ended, and he failed 3 if not 4 of his 5 classes. Again, he never went.

He gets extremely upset sometimes, and goes as far as cutting himself. Once I looked in his phone at a few pictures he was “proud of”. One was of a deeply cut cross in his thigh next to scars from past episodes, and another was a knife with his own blood on it. He doesn’t seem to understand the implications of what he is doing.

Another interesting thing recently is his absurd personality changes and paranoid thought processes. He decided a few weeks ago that he wants to become a hermit. He even spent time on the internet looking at cabins up in the mountains, and frequently talks about how he wants to be far from society. Lately he has also decided he no longer wants a cell phone so the government can’t track him through gps.

One more example is his newly created accent. One day I was talking to him and he began using an arbitrary inflection on certain words somewhat reminiscent of a New York accent. He never used to have an accent, he comes from the same town as I do and we used to talk the same. I honestly can’t even tell if its a conscious decision or if he even realizes he didn’t used to talk like that. I could continue describing him, but these examples by themselves make me wonder whats going on with him.

I don’t know what causes his moods or triggers his personality changes, but its not his home life or money situation because he comes from a stable upper middle class financially secure home. I also doubt its an attention driven situation; people who want attention that already have a fairly large group of good friends don’t go as far as he does.
I don’t want to report it to any authority, if somebody tried to force him to be a certain way I think he would lose it.
He is one of my two best friends, and the only thing he does is his prescribed ADD pills and weed, neither of which would turn him into a spiraling unstable person.

Do you think I am doing well and typical college student affair?

Ok, I will tell you what I do and more, etc. First, I am 20 years old, from NY, I am in college (1st year) for Bachelors degree in Business administration/ advertising. I am very healthy and I excercise every day. I am 5′7 1/2″ tall and weigh 120 lbs. I measure 34-26-34. And I wait for the new president, Barack to be president and I havn’t voted and I hope he does well. Ecn. crisis is bad I hear, but my family and I are intact and unaffected quite fortunately. As I attend college full time M-F, I work several hours each day. My aide assists me in writing and helping me to understand everything the professor lady is saying. I have a very good IQ of 112 and I am very good at learning and school work, but my aide helps me because it is very hard for me to write ALOT in my laptop, in fast paced learning which I do not do well. I am doing well, thankfully for my aide and guidance counselors. I met a girl, a college girl, recently, she is 17, she has blond hair, I have brown. We have been dating for a few months now and we both love each other. We have not had sex yet, we decide to after we are married. We are both Catholic/not very religious. She is 5′6″, I am 5′7 1/2″. I visit her a lot after class, I go to her dorm and we talk a lot. Sometimes we even have drinks (she offers) and I say thank you. And I act as a boyfriend to her and am courteous and offer to buy her drink for her (even though it is hers). She thinks I am very sweet and flattering. Later, she drives me home, sometimes my Mom picks me up in her relly nice car a white Acura TL with leather seats and gps, etc. Oh, and I do drive, but I have some fears about driving, so I only drive out around town to stores, and when I go out with my g/f to nearby clubs, bars (they don’t ID there and we both love that!!) and movies, golf clubs, restauraunts and more. Oh, and my work, I do odd jobs, at home for my parents. I do my chores, extra chores and stuff and I earn 39.00 a week, I used to earn 13.00 a week, but it was tripled, since I work very hard in college and so I can have extra money to take my g/f out and still have money leftover for me. (I know what you must be thinking, but my parents don’t treat me like a little boy, and they help me to make it easier for me while I am in college). I plan to get a professional full time job in business management / advertising when I graduate in 4 years. I once did a non prof. job selling shoes at dept. store for a month and hated it. So, my current allowance is a lot easier, and my parents know work at a workplace is too stressful and a lot for me since I do College full time. Also, I do well with money in other ways in addition to 39.00 a week, I earn a lot each time I rake leaves, shovel, garden, etc. for my parents and neighbors. I say I am doing very well for myself right now. My girl friend and I are very happy together, and I am happy and not too overworked and have plenty of time to enjoy my weekends with me and my parents and younger sister, and older sister (who lives 5 miles away from me in a luxurious gated community overlooking the long island sound), and I see her every week and we hang out and play video games, watch movies, walk by the sound and more. I also spend a lot of time with my girlfriend on weekends we do a lot of clubs and parties and drink and kiss and party and she stays over at me and my parents house if she feels tired or drank alot and I take real good care of her. Anyway, my life couldn’t be any better. So, what do you all think? What do think of my life? Sounds fun? Would you enjoy the life I live?????

Christmas Gifts for Fathers/Husbands? *EDITED*?

Original details:

As you know, Christmas is approaching. My mother is constantly asking me for ideas on what to get for my dad for christmas. He not only doesn’t tell us what he might want, but he doesn’t even show any interest for gifts. If he likes something, he’ll try to buy it himself.

I was wondering what kind of gifts there are to give to fathers this 2009 Christmas.

He already owns an iPhone, which broke. So, he is either going to spend his money to fix it or upgrade to 3gs.
He also just bought a new widescreen t.v to replace an old rear-projection t.v that recently broke.

So, he pretty much likes to pick out his own electronics, at least the more expensive ones…

Added details:

We own a ps3, so we have games and blue-ray. He’s not much of a sports player (has his own golf set), but is an intense UGA (University of Georgia Football) fan. We own a GPS system, but only one for two cars, so that is an option. And lastly, he usually ends up getting some clothes because we don’t know what to get him.

Just fwi, he is getting a special notepad because I was making notepads in my Graphic Arts Class.

Thanks for your suggestions!
